Warmth and Unity at UNIJI’s Upcoming 80th Indonesian Independence Day Celebration: Berbela Rasa dengan Pengemudi OJOL Tuna Rungu dan Perempuan

Jakarta, August 15, 2025 – Smiles lit up and eyes sparkled among hundreds of Komunitas Ojol Tuna Rungu Indonesia (KOTRI) and woman online drivers who gathered at Taman Cattleya on a bright Friday morning. They came not only to receive aid, but also to experience the warmth of togetherness at the “Berbela Rasa dengan Pengemudi OJOL Tuna Rungu dan Perempuan” event, organized by University of Jakarta International (UNIJI) in collaboration with Lions Club Jakarta Selatan Tulip, PT Raja Bearindo Aditama, Inlingua, Jakarta International College (JIC), and SIJI Group.

This meaningful initiative formed part of the upcoming 80th Indonesian Independence Day celebrations, echoing the national theme: Bersatu Berdaulat, Rakyat Sejahtera, Indonesia Maju. The event celebrated unity, compassion, and appreciation for those who work tirelessly on the streets to earn a living.

A Morning Full of Spirit

The fresh morning air at Taman Cattleya was filled with laughter and camaraderie from participants, volunteers, and UNIJI students. Although the Governor of Jakarta was unable to attend, the event’s spirit remained high with the presence of Dr. Ali Maulana Hakim, S.IP., M.Si., Assistant for People’s Welfare at the Jakarta Provincial Government.

In his remarks, Dr. Ali emphasized that empowering vulnerable groups—such as people with disabilities and women in the online transport sector—embodies the true spirit of independence.

“Kita pastikan ini untuk mengingat semangat kemerdekaan, semangat kebersamaan dan juga keterbatasan-keterbatasan yang ada jangan dijadikan alasan. Setiap kendala, setiap masalah, pasti ada solusinya” he stated to warm applause.

The President of UNIJI Dr. Wenny Candra Mandagie, S.E., M.Pd. also greeted the participants with heartfelt words, sharing his personal appreciation for the dedication of OJOL drivers.

“Perjuangan bapak dan ibu sebagai ojol ini ternyata luar biasa di tengah hujan, ya di tengah hujan tetap anda menjalankan amanah yang memang diharapkan dan dibutuhkan oleh pelanggan-pelanggan seperti saya” she said.

Among those who came to share in the moment were drivers from various online transportation platforms widely used in Indonesia such as Grab and Gojek whose presence not only represented the spirit of hard work and perseverance on the streets, but also brought together a diverse group of everyday heroes united in the celebration of compassion and independence.

Students Leading with Heart

One of the most touching moments came from the active involvement of UNIJI students. Members of the UNIJI Philanthropy Club stood at the aid distribution tables, greeting each driver personally, helping carry grocery packages, and even conversing in sign language with deaf drivers.

Seeman, a third-semester UNIJI student, expressed his heartfelt emotion upon seeing the recipients’ smiles:

“We are students from the UNIJI Philanthropy Club, and to celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day, we are sharing food with online drivers, especially those with disabilities and women drivers.”

Meaningful Aid, Beyond Material Value

Hundreds of packages containing daily essentials—such as rice, cooking oil, sugar, and other household staples—were distributed directly to the participants. For many drivers, the aid was more than just supplies; it was a recognition of their hard work and an affirmation that their contributions matter.

Closing with Togetherness

This event proved that Independence Day celebrations are not only marked by ceremonies and competitions, but can also be enriched by meaningful actions that bring humanity to life. All parties involved agreed that initiatives like this should continue in the years to come.
