In today’s changing economy, understanding money is super important for young people. To help them out, University of International Jakarta (UNIJI) recently invited PT Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia to give a talk about the basics of investing and how to manage your stock portfolio.
Oktavianus Audi Kasmarandana, Vice President and Head of Equity Retail at Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia, led the session and shared his real-world knowledge from Indonesia’s stock market. This talk helped students learn the basics of investing and how their financial choices today can shape their future.
One important part of the discussion was about inflation and how living costs are going up. Over time, you can’t buy as much with the same amount of money, which makes it harder to depend only on your job. This was shown with numbers that showed how much less money you can buy with over the years. Because of this, students were encouraged to think about other ways to earn money and understand why investing is so important.
Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia explained three main types of income: active income, passive income, and portfolio income. They especially talked about portfolio income, which comes from things like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, as a key part of making your money last. Students learned that investing isn’t just about making money, but about making smart choices and planning for the future.
One key thing we learned from the session is that investing in stocks is quite different from gambling. When you invest in stocks, you’re essentially buying a piece of a company, and you have the chance to earn money through dividends and as the company grows. To help students make smart choices, we also introduced them to fundamental and technical analysis, which are popular ways to look at investment chances.
Besides the good stuff, the session also talked about the risks of investing, like market ups and downs, possible losses, and things like companies being taken off the stock market. This balanced view helps students see that doing well in investing takes knowledge, staying disciplined, and managing risks properly.
